[VIDEO] Chris Jericho Getting Heat For Controversial Speech
Posted by Ashish on 11.05.2009

TMZ has a story up about Chris Jericho using slurs during a Q&A session at the Sacramento Film Festival two weeks ago. During the Q&A, he referred to the moderator as "Hadji" several times. That word is often used as a slur against Middle Easterners. He also called one of the hosts a "fag."

Jericho issued this statement apologizing for his comments.

"After seeing the video I realize some inappropriate comments were made and I apologize if I offended anybody." Jericho continues, "Just know that everyone on stage was having a blast and we all shared a drink and a laugh after! The good news is I got my wish of being posted on TMZ."

Awww Chris why would you say that?

Your stock has gone down a bit after reading that. We need to stop using the F word people.

When I saw the headline, I was pissed at Jericho. Once I saw the video, I was pissed at TMZ and no longer pissed at Jericho.

Hadji means a man who has visited Jerusalem. It's not a racial slur.

Posted By: Guest#8674 (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 02:21 AM

"Hadji" is from the Johnny Quest cartoon. Who gives a fuck.

Posted By: Guest#0387 (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 02:22 AM

Jericho was likely making Johnny Quest references, although fag isn't really acceptable in any situation any more.

Posted By: Joel Yeomans (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 02:25 AM

TMZ is nothing but a bunch of sycophants.

Posted By: Commander Hill (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 02:25 AM

frickin idiots hadji=used as slang by troops in Iraq to describe an Iraqi citizen. Usually used in an offensive context. Also spelled Hajji, because noone can make up thier minds which is correct.
Hadji is actually a term of respect for muslims who have made the piligrmage to Mecca and completed the "Hajj". Those who have completed the Hajj often have Hajj added as a prefix to thier name when being formally addressed.
Although I would think Jericho was using it in reference to the Johnny Quest character but really a non-starter.

Political correctness has really gone wild if people really kick up a stink about this

Okay, so he has heat on him. But does he have NUCLEAR HEATZ?!

If it was a black guy and Jericho called him the N word, we'd have people calling for him to be fired. I'm not saying any racial slur is in good taste or anything, but every other race and religion can take a fucking joke.

Posted By: Guest#7785 (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 02:36 AM

That's one more potential threat I don't have to worry about anymore.

I guess Jericho didn't get this week's list of what words are not acceptable to say. Did Al Sharpton forget to send it to him?

actually it's "Haji" and the it means "bringer of gifts"

Posted By: The More You Know (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 04:09 AM

I don't know, if he was being a heel, his character is someone who's supposed to be intelligent, can't see that guy throwing those words around.
Didn't one of the guys in the movie zone mention him being an asshole at a film festival recently? Just showing up, getting as drunk as possible and being a dick?

Posted By: Robin (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 04:17 AM

I didn't find that offensive, then again I am not from the middle east although I have been called hadji before, but was because I resembled hadji from JOHNNY QUEST.

Anyway, it looked like a free for all and he was just cutting lose.

"After seeing the video I realize some inappropriate comments were made and I apologize if I offended anybody."

This is a complete NON apology, and it pisses me off. The word “if” qualifies the apology out of an apology. Using the word “if”, the apologizer says the offense may or may not have happened at all and even if the offense did happen, the damage has more to do with the sensibilities of the victim than the responsibility of the apologizer.

And he doesn't man up to what he did, or directly say what he did wrong- "some inappropriate remarks were made". Mealy-mouthed passive voice BS.

And seriously, "fag" as an insult? What is Y2J, eleven years old, now?

I'd have lol'd if I were there.

Stuff like this is ridiculous, why would people be offended by stuff like this? People need to lighten up.

Posted By: Guest#8989 (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 06:04 AM

Jericho calling some guy a 'fag' in an off-the-cuff quip is not offensive. What's more offensive is Sharia Law, political correctness, positive discrimination, affirmative action, and the 'equality' bill.

If I was Jericho, I'd have told these pussies who took offense to it to suck my nob dry. After all, as Silly Media said, he is a heel.

All this proves to me is that sometimes slurs between friends can be used tongue in cheek and are seen as just dumb jokes rather than outright offensive.

The old rule applies: if it's FUNNY you're not in trouble. And no, a thousand unwashed fanboys waiting to get offended at any comment that they think other people should be offended by don't matter. If the target is amused, that's all that matters.

And cue the politically correct crowd getting all uppity about nothing like always. It's WORDS, people need to grow some damn skin and get the fuck over it. This makes me respect Jericho more for having the balls to just say something rather than constantly having a stick up his ass worrying about his comments possibly being construed as halfway moderately offensive by someone he's never met, will never meet, and will never do anything about it.

As long as youre over 6' 2" and can kick or throw a shoulder block you have enough talent for the WWE.

Jericho IS a born-again Christian................ so of COURSE he's a bigoted piece of shit that hates anyone who isn't a repressed lily-white fascist like himself! He's no more sorry about what he said than his buddy Chris Benoit is sorry about his "domestic problems".

What the fuck are you rambling about with the "if" word being in there? It's not like that's the first (or last) time anyone's written/said an apology in that specific manner, just so you know. And even if he didn't feel too sincere about apologizing, you can bet your ass - and whatever oversized object it is that's stuck in there - that he won't be hurling any subliminal phrases in the interwebs that'd reveal it.

If none of the guys he jabs his tongue at takes offense, no harm is done IMO. Sure as hell ain't the only person in the present day who uses a "slur" of some form.

Once again, Jericho lives the gimmick.

ASK HIM, FAG.

This is the type of attitiude that has caused so many things to decline in recent years. People are so worried about offending anybody, doing anything risky, that they have cut the balls off of everybody.

Television is filled with retarded reality shows and super tame and lame competition shows. It's all insulting to the intelligence.

Movies are almost never edgy and fun anymore, but just boring CGI spectacles with annoying jokes designed to make idiots laugh during the trailer.

And wrestling probaly doesn't even need any explanation. We went from Rock and Austin to Cena and Orton. Nuff said.

Posted By: You all are (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 04:25 PM

Wow...ok

First of all, yeah i watched the episode of South Park last night...and people using that as a defense ALREADY that the word fag doesn't mean gay person anymore, it just means some asshole..

First of all, it may mean that to some people now...but it stemmed from what it was once used for, so that is still what it is associated with
I thought that south park episode was fucking hilarious...but to sit here in reality and actually believe that this word does NOT at least stem from hateful slander is beyond naive and shameful. And who are you all to decide what is ok to say?? If someone is offended by it then they are just a bunch of "PC butt hurt pussies"?? So then basically anyone should be able to say whatever they want about anyone or anything and it's just someone else's fault for being offended?? It's really easy to pass off that guilt isn't it.....it's not up to you what is hurtful to others! There are still probably thousands upon thousands of gay people out there that still feel this word holds it's hateful rhetoric...which in many cases, it still DOES!! Westboro Baptist anyone?? Grow up people...realize other's words can be harmful and they shouldn't be deemed a "pussy" because of it

It's 2009 and people are still getting up in arms over one little word. How pathetic. Here in America we have freedom of speech no one has the right to not be offended by something, hell i'm offended by some of the bullshit that a lot of you whiny, over-sensitive, politically-correct sheep have posted but I don't expect an apology.

Anyone else notice how much of hypocrite Informed! is? Dude, you go on this self-righteous tangent about how people shouldn't use the f word anymore and then you proceed to call someone a bitch. You then make an ignorant generalization about southerners being mouth breathers. You're no better than the people you are complaining about. Either everybody should say what they want or we forbid all words that could offend anyone. Me personally, I find it deeply disturbing that anybody would try to prevent someone from expressing themselves.

Posted By: Informed! is ill-informed (Guest)  on November 05, 2009 at 06:20 PM

To be fair, there has been plenty of intelligent debate on both sides but in my opinion political correctness has gone too far. Pretty soon we'll all be worried about offending pederasts and we'll have to call them child-loving americans. (No, I'm not comparing gay people to pederasts but hopefully you see my point.)

its not really the same thing, in germany you can go to prison for nazi saluting (i have first hand experience of this due to being drunk and with england fans for the world cup)

How much longer are people going to defend this guy? He punches a young woman in the face, makes these blindingly childish remarks and people forgive him because he's talented, some bozo's have even said that they respect him more!!! If it was Bob Holly or Steve Corino all of the Jericoholics would be vitriolic towards them. Holly would have (yet again) been branded a bully if he had thumped that fan and would have been called an ignorant bigot for making thise remarks, but because it's Jericho his fans just dismiss it as "Oh the guys just having fun, no big deal". These are are same sort of 'fans' who made tribute videos to Benoit on the anniversary of his death. Just because somebody is talented that does not make their offensive actions permissable.

sorry Jim, but german law prohibits it only when it is done outside of a performance. you can go to jail for reminding the anti semitic baby killers in germany what their (grand)fathers did to the world if you do it as part of a protest or as a member of a neo-nazi movement, but not in the context of a performance.

you may have experience as a drunken nazi (kidding, just kidding,) but i have experience from knowing the laws of countries i have (soberly) served in.
